At Front Steps, we believe every story of finding a home is a triumph worth sharing. This month, we are honored to highlight the journey of Mr. Duncan, a recently housed client whose perseverance and determination have inspired us all.
Mr. Duncan’s story began when his home was foreclosed on, thrusting him and his partner, Ms. Lee, into a period of intense chaos and uncertainty. With Ms. Lee’s finances tied up in litigation, the couple found themselves without stable housing and facing extreme emotional and mental challenges. The sudden loss of their home led to a period of deep depression and isolation, making each day a struggle for survival.
To cope with their situation, Mr. Duncan and Ms. Lee moved from one motel to another, searching for any semblance of stability. As a veteran, Mr. Duncan visited the VA to explore the benefits he might be eligible for, hoping to find some relief. However, the modern housing market presented its own set of hurdles. The requirements to obtain an apartment had become increasingly stringent, with landlords often demanding tenants to earn three times the rent just to be considered. Additionally, they encountered numerous fees that piled up, only to be met with denials or the disheartening news that they did not qualify.
These obstacles only deepened their feelings of despair, particularly for Mr. Duncan and Ms. Lee, who desperately sought safe and stable housing. Realizing they could no longer navigate this journey alone, they decided to seek help. In April of 2024, they took a pivotal step towards regaining their stability by reaching out to Front Steps.
Upon visiting our office, Mr. Duncan and Ms. Lee were welcomed by our dedicated case management team, Petra and Trina. Understanding the urgency of their situation, Petra and Trina worked tirelessly to assist them. Within a month, Mr. Duncan and Ms. Lee found themselves in a stable home.
Reflecting on their journey, Mr. Duncan shared,
“Front Steps provided for us the chance to do other things that better ourselves, other than trying to find a roof over our head.”
This newfound stability has allowed them to focus on improving their lives and working towards a brighter future.
Mr. Duncan’s story is a powerful reminder of the resilience of the human spirit and the difference that compassionate support can make. At Front Steps, we are proud to have been a part of his journey, and we remain committed to helping others find their pathway home.
