First Steps – A Homeless Prevention Program

Need Help Staying in Your Home?

Front Steps has a program that may be able to help you. It’s called First Steps, a homeless prevention program. This program gives one-time help each year to people who are facing eviction or losing their home. If you live in the Austin Metro Area, and are 18 years or older, you are eligible to apply for assistance.

This program can help people who live in the Austin Metro Area with past-due rent, security deposits, utility bills, pet fees, and more. If you are close to losing your home and don’t have another place to go, you can apply for assistance. It will help our team process your application if you provide documents upfront like an ID, proof of income, or a letter from your landlord.

What to Expect

After you apply, a case manager will contact you within 14 business days to talk about next steps. If you are approved, we will send payment to your landlord or utility company within 10 to 14 business days.

Please note: We ask that you don’t apply more than once — that will only slow down our system.

We want to help people stay safe and housed. If you’re scared about losing your home, please apply. And while you wait, you can look for other help at findhelp.org.

Documentation

Your application is your opportunity to express your circumstances. Most importantly, providing IDs, proof of hardship, and proof of income will help us process your application faster as these documents will be required.

Don’t be discouraged if you don’t have all the documents right now. We understand — and we still encourage you to apply.

How to Apply for Help?

You can start the process by submitting an application.

Please know that applying does not guarantee approval, but it is the first step toward getting the help you may need. After you apply, a case manager will reach out within 14 business days to guide you through the next steps. If you’re approved, payments are sent directly to your landlord or service provider within 10 to 14 business days.

Important: Submitting more than one application won’t improve your chances—it may actually delay the process for you and others. One complete application is all you need to be considered.

We’re doing our best to serve everyone with care and respect, and we thank you for your patience as we review each request.
