Meet Ms. Tiffany, homelessness for her didn’t happen overnight.
A veteran who served in the U.S. Air Force, Tiffany’s journey was shaped by years of unexpected challenges. After experiencing sexual assault during her military service, she made the difficult decision to leave. Later came a divorce, financial hardship, the loss of steady employment during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the heartbreaking death of her beloved dog.
Each setback added another layer of uncertainty until, eventually, she found herself struggling to keep a roof over her head.
After working multiple jobs, including driving for rideshare services and working at Starbucks, Tiffany still couldn’t earn enough to stay ahead of rising expenses. An early lease termination left her with thousands of dollars in debt. Even living with family became unsafe because of terrible living conditions. This led her to rent another apartment yet again, in hopes of starting fresh.
But grief and depression made everyday life increasingly difficult. As bills piled up, she eventually lost electricity in her home and began spending the last of her money on hotel rooms just to have a safe place to sleep.
“The biggest challenge was mostly internal,” Tiffany shared. “I began to slowly isolate myself and suffered in silence. I didn’t want to burden others around me.”
Thankfully, her mother encouraged her to reach out for support through the Veterans Affairs office, which connected her with Front Steps.
“Front Steps was the only organization I reached out to where I didn’t feel any shame about my situation.”
When Tiffany first walked into the Front Steps office, she was welcomed with compassion instead of judgment.
She remembers being greeted by Veronica, who listened to her story with kindness. They cried together, hugged, and for the first time in a long while, Tiffany felt seen. Soon after, she began working with her case manager, Jaime, who helped guide her toward stability through housing assistance in Austin.
Today, Tiffany has a place to call home. While financial challenges and debt remain part of her journey, she is rebuilding her life one step at a time. Recently, she purchased something many people might overlook: a couch and a lamp. To Tiffany, those pieces of furniture were symbols of healing.
“Slowly, I’m starting to make this place my own,” she said. “It’s even helped me get out of the depression because I wasn’t hiding in my room anymore.”
When asked what she’s most proud of, she said:
“I am proud of myself for asking for help.” And sometimes, it’s the bravest step a person can take.
To others experiencing homelessness or facing difficult circumstances, Tiffany offers this encouragement:
“If you are able to find an organization to help, do it. There are people you can talk to, places to get food, shelter, and support. People underestimate how important it is to just talk to someone.”
For the donors, volunteers, and community members who make Front Steps’ work possible, Tiffany has one heartfelt message:
“Thank you for your continued support. The support you offer can make a difference. People matter. Sometimes when you’re in the middle of trauma, you forget you can turn on a light. Thank you for being that light for others.”
Stories like Tiffany’s show that homeless assistance in Austin is about more than providing housing. It’s about restoring hope, rebuilding confidence, and reminding people they don’t have to face life’s hardest moments alone.
