Mr. Michael proudly served in the U.S. Air Force before building a life centered around his passion for technology. With a strong interest in IT, he pursued and earned a network engineering certification, envisioning a stable and fulfilling future. For many years, he lived and worked in Dallas, confident in the path ahead. But during the COVID-19 pandemic, a divorce and the weight of depression shifted everything. What followed was an unexpected and difficult chapter of homelessness. Despite the challenges, Mr. Michael never lost sight of the future he wanted.
“I looked toward the future and reminded myself that this will not last forever.”
Like many individuals seeking homeless assistance in Austin, Mr. Michael reached out to Front Steps, ready to make a change. “I needed a steady home to lay my head,” he shared. When Mr. Michael connected with Front Steps, a non-profit in Austin dedicated to ending homelessness, his biggest fear was that no one would be able to help him. But that uncertainty quickly turned into hope. During intake, his case manager, walked him through the process with care and clarity.
“The very next day, (Front Steps) found an apartment for me. One I had always wanted to live in.”
Today, Mr. Michael is in disbelief at how quickly his life has turned around. He has a job, a new home, and renewed confidence in himself. “I’m most proud that I didn’t give up,” he said. Looking ahead, he’s excited to pursue a career in cybersecurity and continue building the life he worked so hard to reclaim.
