A Place for His Kids to Come Home To: Mr. Rodney’s Story

By February 11, 2026No Comments

On any given afternoon, you might find Mr. Rodney walking along Lady Bird Lake with his two children, laughing, talking about school, and simply enjoying being together.

But just months ago, he didn’t have a place for them to visit.

Originally from North Carolina, Mr. Rodney served four years in the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. After his military service, life shifted in ways he didn’t expect. At one point, he found himself without stable housing and navigating homelessness in Austin while trying to remain strong for his children.

He was unhoused for three weeks.

Surviving the Cold

When Mr. Rodney first began searching for help, he went to the Austin Resource Center for the Homeless (ARCH), where he slept outside the building for several nights. The biggest challenge during that time was staying warm..

To get through the freezing days, he would pick up bus passes from the Trinity Center for Veterans and ride around the city looking for food, warm clothing, and temporary relief from the cold.

Eventually, the Trinity Center connected him to Front Steps. At the time, he wasn’t sure what to expect.

“It was the first organization I went through a program with,” he shared.

Support from Front Steps

When Mr. Rodney arrived for his first meeting at Front Steps, he was led into a conference room. Something unexpected caught his attention.

“Seeing all the pictures on the wall of people like me who had been helped made me feel more comfortable with them (case managers).”

In that moment, the uncertainty began to ease. He realized he wasn’t alone and that real people had walked this road before him and found stability again. Through support and guidance, Mr. Rodney was able to move from homelessness into stable housing in Austin.

A Home

Today, the thing he is most proud of is having somewhere for his kids to come visit. That stability means everything. It means safety, privacy and dignity. It means being able to build memories without uncertainty hanging over them.

Now that he is in his new home, Mr. Rodney is looking ahead. He plans to return to school to take leadership classes. When asked why, his answer was straightforward:

“Personal development.”

His experience with homelessness does not define him. Whatever turning point led to those three weeks without housing is not the headline of his life. What defines Mr. Rodney is his determination to keep moving forward, to grow, to improve, and to create a better future for himself and his children.

Supporting Veterans Experiencing Homelessness in Austin
