Ms. Gomez’s Journey with Front Steps
Meet our neighbor Ms. Gomez! She is an Air Force veteran and Austin native who has a passion for art work, enjoys reading, and loves spending time with her family. Ms. Gomez encountered numerous obstacles including homelessness and difficulty accessing resources. The instability of homelessness made it difficult to focus on her passions. But through determination and the support of Front Steps, she has found a place to call home.
A Second Chance Through Front Steps
Ms. Gomez first sought support from a peer counselor, who helped connect her to vital resources for veterans. After waiting for over a year with another organization, she arrived at Front Steps feeling both hopeful and defeated. “I did not believe that the program could facilitate finding housing,” she admits. “Front Steps offered me one last opportunity.”
Overcoming Challenges with Support
Like many facing homelessness, Ms. Gomez’s biggest struggle was regaining stability. She struggled with post-traumatic stress disorder and found herself substance abuse. Securing necessities such as housing, food, and clothing was a constant challenge. However, she found strength through therapy, peer support, and her family. “Cultivating and utilizing my support team was key,” she says.
One moment in particular stood out during her journey—seeing firsthand how dedicated the Front Steps team was to their mission. “They go above and beyond,” she says. “They define what rapid housing really is.”
The Relief of Having a Home
Finally securing housing brought an overwhelming sense of relief and accomplishment. “I feel I have achieved something significant,” Ms. Gomez shares. “I didn’t have to settle. I’m living where I am happy to call home.”
For others navigating similar struggles, Ms. Gomez’s message is clear: “Don’t give up. It can be a taxing process, but it’s worth it. Front Steps won’t have you settle for less. They have your back.”
She also expresses deep gratitude to those who support organizations like Front Steps. “Your contributions have paved the way for veterans to have stable housing, which is an invaluable donation.”
Looking Ahead
Now that she has a stable home, Ms. Gomez is excited to pursue her education in the medical field. Her journey has reaffirmed her resilience, and she hopes that communities will continue reaching out to veterans in need. “Sometimes, just lending an ear can make a difference.”
Ms. Gomez’s story is a testament to the power of persistence, community support, and the vital role that organizations like Front Steps play in helping people find their way home.
