How Front Steps Helped the Griffin Family Overcome Homelessness in Austin

Meet The Griffin Family!

For over a year, Mr. and Mrs. Griffin lived in their car. They faced many hard challenges that tested their faith, relationship, and strength. Mr. Griffin is from Houston, while Mrs. Griffin was born and raised in Austin. Both love the outdoors, cooking, and spending time together, even during tough times.

Finding Help with Front Steps

Their journey toward stable housing began unexpectedly. Mrs. Griffin remembers, “It was the flashing LED sign that said Front Steps.” Around the same time, a kind police officer recognized Mr. Griffin as a veteran. He guided them toward help for homeless veterans. Then, they reached out to Front Steps, a nonprofit that works to end homelessness in Austin.

Unlike other places they tried, Front Steps responded right away. Staff members Trina and Ana became their guides. They helped the Griffins find rapid housing assistance for homeless veterans.

Overcoming Homelessness Together

Living in a car brought many problems. They struggled to find safe places to sleep and had little access to showers. Worse, they often felt judged by others. “People looking down their nose at us was the hardest part,” said Mr. Griffin. Still, their faith and the caring support from Front Steps gave them hope.

At first, Mrs. Griffin was unsure if help would come. She said, “I wasn’t confident it would work at first.” However, Front Steps never gave up on them. Staff encouraged the Griffins to keep going. Thanks to their persistence, the couple moved into an apartment within two months.

A New Beginning and a Message of Hope

Now, the Griffins feel grateful and hopeful. Mrs. Griffin is excited about meal prepping and getting help from family. “People stopped looking down their nose at us,” said Mr. Griffin. They want others to know: “Don’t give up. There is hope. Call Front Steps.”

To donors, volunteers, and supporters of Front Steps, the Griffins say: “Thank you. Your kindness makes all the difference.” Their story shows how care, persistence, and community support can change lives for homeless veterans and families.
