When Mr. Tariq looks back on his journey, he describes it as one guided by faith and love for his family. “I’m a military veteran who was homeless and in need of help,” he shared. “I love my kids, and I love sports, especially basketball and football. But, most importantly, I love my family.”
For months, Mr. Tariq lived in his car with nowhere else to go. “There were times when my A/C didn’t work, and I had to go weeks in the heat before getting it fixed,” he said. “I had to shower at the gym and had no idea what was next for me.” Despite the uncertainty, he never gave up hope. “I prayed to God every single day.”
When he first connected with Front Steps, a homelessness nonprofit in Austin, he admits he was cautious at first. “I felt like it was too good to be true and that this is an amazing opportunity,” he said. But with the support of his case manager, things began to change. “She was the nicest and most helpful person I have ever met.”
Today, Mr. Tariq finally has a safe place to call home. “It’s the most amazing feeling ever,” he said with a smile. “I’m proud that I kept my faith and always knew God had a plan.”
Now that he’s housed, Mr. Tariq is looking forward to his next chapter. “I want to work on my credit, save money, and buy a house one day for my children.” To anyone going through something similar he shares, “keep faith and know you are not alone. And if you served in the military, the country will serve you too.”
When asked what he would say to Front Steps donors and volunteers, his message was simple: “You are the best, and this program is amazing.”
Mr. Tariq’s journey is a testament to how compassion, faith, and the right support can help transform lives, one step at a time.
