Ms. Cristina is a proud veteran who dedicated 10 years to the Army and another 10 years to the Air Force. With over 25 years of experience in IT, she has always been a problem-solver and someone who takes pride in her work.
Outside of her career, Cristina enjoys spending time outdoors, hiking, diving, and relaxing at the beach. She also loves taking long drives while listening to her favorite music. Life was steady and fulfilling, but when she suddenly lost her job in early 2025, everything changed.
At first, Cristina tried to manage on her own. However, as bills piled up and her savings began to run low, she realized she needed help. What made things harder was the lack of real, human connection. She struggled to find someone who would listen, understand, and walk beside her through this difficult season.
Fortunately, she discovered Front Steps’ Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program, which helps veterans experiencing or at risk of homelessness in Austin. For Cristina, that first phone call made all the difference.
“When I first connected with Front Steps, I felt welcomed. They were very supportive, caring, and understanding,” shared Ms. Cristina.
With the support of her housing case manager, Cristina finally began to feel hopeful again. One of her biggest goals was to find a safe home where she could keep her pets—a place where her family felt complete. After working closely with Front Steps, she was able to find the perfect home that met all her needs.
Looking back, Cristina feels grateful for the compassion and care she received throughout the process. She also wants others to know that there’s no shame in asking for help.
“Thank you! Please keep it up. Everyone needs help at some time,” she said, addressing the donors, volunteers, and supporters who make Front Steps’ work possible.
Today, Ms. Cristina is rebuilding her life with confidence and hope. Her story is a reminder that even those who have served our country sometimes need a helping hand—and that with community support, no one has to face those challenges alone.
