Front Steps has hosted its second Corporate event, “Cocktails over Congress,” at the scenic Edge Rooftop Bar. This corporate networking and philanthropy event was a bright and entertaining evening in which attendees discovered where Front Steps is headed, networked with corporate executives, and learned about the homeless issue in Travis County. The Edge Rooftop provided amazing scenery of Austin’s heart of downtown, overlooking the river and the unique buildings surrounding it.
Remarks from Front Steps from our Executive Director
The evening began with exquisite appetizers, which the Hilton’s professional chefs prepared, and some light refreshments. As attendees enjoyed their food, they networked and lounged on the rooftop, enjoying the beautiful views. Shortly after, Front Steps’ executive director, Sheila Joseph, began opening remarks, welcomed everyone, and introduced Front Steps. Ms. Joseph shared her testimony of how she came from Louisiana to the heart of Texas and was exposed to the “homeless community” for the first time. She felt a strong calling to help her brethren and stand up for their housing rights. For this reason, she led the way to re-establish Front Steps. Ms. Joseph continued to further their mission of creating a “pathway home through shelter, affordable housing, and community education” for those in need.
What Front Steps is doing to help our houseless neighbors
Following Ms. Joseph’s touching remarks, Nicholas Strother, Director of Client Services at Front Steps, presented attendees with key statistics about homelessness in Austin. Strother’s presentation highlighted the challenges and needs of the homeless community. He then introduced current programs at Front Steps, such as:
- Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) | Veteran services: https://frontsteps.org/veteran-services/
- Housing Displacement Prevention Program (HDPP) | Financial assistance: https://frontsteps.org/first-steps/
- Permanent Supportive Housing Program (PSHP) | Long-term housing: https://frontsteps.org/permanent-supportive-housing-program/
Later, Antonio Harmon, Director of Development at Front Steps, announced the plans for Community Housing Development for veterans. This project will create a space for our houseless neighbors to grow, form a community in which they feel safe, and provide resources for veterans to immerse in.
Join the change
Front Steps is hosting The Elevation Gala this November 10th to raise funds for our Community Housing Development. Front Steps has always been a dedicated ally in supporting our unhoused neighbors, especially US veterans who may face unique challenges. We understand the importance of honoring their service and are committed to helping them overcome obstacles and find stability. In 2023 alone, Front Steps assisted 203 veterans in transitioning into stable housing solutions. The Elevation Gala is more than just an event; it’s a celebration of community and a testament to the incredible impact we can achieve together.
